Click the blue links below for pics of the games cases! ![]() Here is a list of the most obscure games in the genre I've come across in my decades of playing video games, and while I can say many are very innovative with interesting and unique features, most have stayed subdued for a reason (because they suck, lol.) While most are Japanese only and you'll have to blind-play through them, many of these games have fan translations or actually were localized too, so not all hope is lost! Just search for the translation patch, and use their FAQ if you need help with the process (it's SUPER easy.) Be sure to search everywhere else that you can if they don't have what you're looking for. Some localized titles even remained ignored. For every franchise most know that made it here and were successful in their own right ( Medabot, Digimon, Monster Rancher, Megaman Battle Network, Yokai Watch, Dragon Quest Monsters, etc.), there were two that stayed behind only to fade into obscurity, lost in translation. Unfortunately, the majority of these games got lost in the marketing flurry, and not only never made it state-side, but are niche even in Japan. Releasing their own unique gameplay and interpretations (or just blatant rip-offs) of Satoshi Tajiri's formula, including multiple colored cartridge versions with dozens to hundreds of strange organisms or robots to collect. Oh, and of course even earlier into their mythology with Yokai's!Įvery Japanese game company in the 90's through early 2000's, new and old, clambered to snatch up just a little of Pokemon's fame. Specifically with their fascination of cataloguing nature, creating bestiaries, and collecting insects to pit against each other in battle. The world-wide explosion of the monster collecting and breeding genre can almost be inextricably linked to the success of Pokemon, and even deeper to its origin country of Japan's rich history.
